This is disturbing to him because people believe the things that companies advertise. He comments how advertisement has been a big influence on people, so the advertisements are becoming more entertaining for people to watch. His argument is supported by providing entertaining advertisements to sell a product. For example, one of the commercials Marche talks about is the Old Spice commercial. These commercial has really influenced people to watch and have hits in YouTube. Therefore, because of these commercials, advertisements have become a different art form. Now people can’t tell what the advertisement is trying to neither persuade nor identify (Marche).
I agree with Marche that advertisements are not important at all, but I feel that the argument is not reasonable to argue about. Advertisements can be interesting to watch and not persuasive. Even though the advertisements do not have a purpose, I feel that they can really be funny. I believe that advertisements are not influential when it comes to selling products. The products that I see in the television are not persuasive enough for me to buy. This can be because I know that the way they make the product sound is exaggerated. Something that I like about advertisements is that some are very funny and entertaining to watch. I would like to see more advertisements that are interesting because they can really make you laugh. In You Tube, when you are about to watch a video, an advertisement shows up. I usually do not skip the ad because I want to get a good laugh and enjoy the advertisement. When the advertisement is not interesting, then I skip the ad.

Many movies suggest that the future will hold technology to control minds; however, some people may argue that the technology already exists and it is very evident as exemplified by the large demand of companies to buy advertising spots for the Super Bowl. I agree with Marche that advertising can receive more respect as an art form if they begin to take it more seriously in how they frame their products or services. Many companies have resorted to using advertisements that leave the viewer confused and with no knowledge of what the company was initially intending to sell to them. Advertisements are seen as a from of mind-control because they get into our everyday lives getting us to think in a certain way, such as wanting us to buy a brand name item just because of the name instead of an equally as good, if not better generic brand. If companies would actually make a clear effort to take their own products seriously and offer better commercials I would watch them. Commercials, as annoying as some may be, allow for other programs to run and stay on the air. I believe that advertisement is a necessary evil, but why chose the greatest evil and create confusing advertisements clear and concise advertisements can go a long way.

One is a leech, sucking what blood it can before it is noticed and actively plucked off. The other is a vampire, suave and charming, up front about his goal but nevertheless enticing. His allure and subtle manipulation cause his victims to seek out his bite. Impeccable though his style is, his aim is no different than the leech, and so it is with the unwashed masses of advertising and their Super Bowl counterparts. Super Bowl ads are, if anything, more insidious in their efforts than regular commercial programming; when people are watching specifically for the commercials and taking breaks during the show, there is some phenomenal manipulation taking place.

It is not so much the product being advertised, but rather, the way companies go about doing it. There are many different ways that products are advertised on television. Commercials that are funny, play to someone’s emotions, and commercials that make people feel insecure without buying the products are a list of just a few. Different people prefer different types of advertising directed towards them. If companies keep paying for advertisements to be put in every sense of human lives then they will still be there. Once people demand that they are tired and frustrated with the repetitive advertisements, the companies will stop. At this point there are so many commercials being thrown at consumers on a daily basis that they could not tell you the last five commercials they have seen.
For someone to say that they have gone out and bought an item solely off of seeing an advertisement for it is completely ridiculous. Advertisements do no more than remind than remind people that they do not really need something. If the consumer actually needed the item than it probably would have already been bought. The over-abundance of advertisements is simply annoying. The fact that there are advertisements in every aspect of our lives is too much, companies need to calm down about the amount of commercials they put out. I have probably seen the same three commercials about five times today, and I have still yet to go out and buy any of these items.

Stephen Marche’s call for better advertising makes a lot of sense. Most of the ads on t.v. are really dumb and don’t really affect the consumers of America. Advertisements really can be artistic if enough effort is put forth.His argument about the super bowl commercials is especially true, there is always that one that everybody is talking about the next day. Since the advertising is such a huge part of our society it would only make sense that they were crafted better.

Brianna makes a good point when saying not all people, including herself, fall into advertising traps of persuading the consumers. Jonnah adds on to this idea as he mentions that he uses commercials as a “pee” break from the show. When watching a TV show, I use the commercials as a time to take a break as well: go to the bathroom, get a snack, etc. I am usually not one to be influenced by advertisement either, mainly because I do not (and try not) to pay attention to most of it. The only exception for this is the Super bowl. Anyone familiar with the Super bowl should agree that the commercials are known to be good. Millions of dollars were most likely spent on just commercials in one super bowl year. In my opinion, Super bowl commercials are meant for entertainment, not for purchasing items. My ideas on the statement from the article that advertisements make Americans “fat and in debt” are mixed. I do support the fact that advertisements have some impact on weight and financial issues in America, but that is not the only contributor. Easy access to certain things that make Americans obese and poor plays a major role in the reasoning. For example, fast food is an easy (and cheap) dinner to pick up on-the-go and also time-shares are easily accessible to buy.
