The most voice to the most people: Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook’s goals

Is Facebook a global public utility? A for-profit business? A necessity of modern life? A vile and dangerous entity? Some combination of the above? Whatever it is (or isn’t), Facebook does grow, evolve, and respond to all manner of changing conditions and events. Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg explains two new policy statements in this March 2015 post to his public page.

Read it here: Zuckerberg, "About Community Standards”

  1. Zuckerberg’s statement addresses both the Global Government Requests Report and the Community Standards policy statement that had been released earlier that day. To which of these items does Zuckerberg give more attention? Should he have focused more on the other document? Why or why not?
  2. Zuckerberg mentions that Facebook has had interactions with various national governments, but he doesn’t provide any specific examples. Why might he have chosen to omit them? Would his argument have been strengthened if he had included specific examples? Why or why not?
  3. Read (or re-read) Gladstone & Neufeld’s essay in Chapter 17 of your text, and pay particular attention to their discussions of homophily and incestuous amplification. Would they consider Facebook to be an example of one or both of those concepts? Why or why not? Reload the page with Zuckerberg’s statement several times, and pay attention to the ads that accompany the page. How well do they align with your personal interests and characteristics? Compare ad lists with several classmates: what are the similarities and differences between your lists? How easily can you explain the comparisons?
  4. Facebook’s goal, as Zuckerberg states, is to “give the most voice to the most people,” and he adds that threats of violence and bullying are examples “where one person exercising their voice may unfairly limit the voices of many others.” Do you agree with this explanation of why threats and bullying are problematic? Write an essay in which you elaborate on the effects of cyberbullying and threats of violence, and discuss how, if at all, the problem should be handled. Use Zuckerberg as your They Say, and support your argument with one or more relevant examples.

In this article, Zuckerberg fails to present the various government relations he and Facebook have had in the past. while some may wonder why he has done this, it is more than likely because they were negative interactions. If he were to include them, it would only go against him. Although, this is all speculation, and i could very well be wrong.

This article genuinely pissed me off, excuse my language. Zuckerburg titles this “the most voice to the most people” yet discusses the idea of what/how your “voice” is silenced. He also discusses all the legal aspects of letting your voice being heard, and its position depending on the country, and or state in which you are posting from. This article is also a self-promo for all of the apps that Zuckerburg puts out. (Not in article) The question is asked if whether or not Facebook is “ global public utility? A for-profit business? A necessity of modern life? A vile and dangerous entity?”(They Say, I Blog). Quite frankly it is a combination of all. The site itself is not only used to connect with loved ones and family members, self-promotion, but also cyber-bullying. Which is one of the most common reasons for suicide today. Zuckerburg does recognize this as a problem and then states that through Community Standards, Report requests, and the government, comments can be taken down. He continues to babble about Community Standards in order to re-assure the user, but through it, provides no absolute that cyber-bullying and or “serious” matters can be handled. Although I disagree and or dislike a great amount of what Zuckerburg says, his idea of giving more people a voice intrigues me. The idea is what kept me reading.

While they rarely admit as much, most people often take for granted that they have as much freedom on the internet as they do. On social media’s, like Facebook, you are very free to say whatever you want. On twitter you can pretty much tweet whatever without anyone saying anything. Mark Zuckerberg said in his post that he wants “to give people the power to share and to make the world more open and connected.” I feel that by him creating Facebook he really started “big” social media’s. These “big” social media’s really do make the world more connected. People are free to speak their mind and find people with similar interests to theirs on these medias. So I feel like Mark has achieved his goal of creating a place where people have the power to share and speak freely.

In recent discussion of Facebook, one controversial issue has been whether governments of different countries are putting too many laws and restrictions on Facebook. On the one hand, Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook argues that Facebook’s soul purpose is to give people around the world a voice. Whether that voice is to communicate to family or friends or even put your opinion on any topic out there for people to read, Zuckerberg believes that with fewer laws, you have more of a voice. On the other hand, there have been governments that have completely restricted the use of Facebook in their country. In some countries, it is illegal to say or post certain things online, for example, in Turkey it is illegal to defame Ataturk. This is an example of a law that takes away your individual voice, but for good reason. My own view is that certain countries already have laws set in place. Facebook was most likely created after many of these laws and therefore should have no say whether or not the country should be able to restrict the use of Facebook or not. If the country does not want its people speaking out and saying things, then there is no way that Facebook has any power to overrule. In conclusion, I object that even though Zuckerberg is only doing a good thing by trying to give people a voice, the company has to be okay with the fact that not every country has the same laws and regulations and that their website will not thirve in every country.

In discussions of Facebook, one controversial issue has been the fact that threats of violence and bullying causes someone (if not more) to unfairly exert their voice over another’s. On the one hand, Zuckerberg argues that threats of bullying and violence will be taken down because it limits the amount of people they can give a voice to; This is why they’ve created the Community Standards to establish these basic rules in the community. On the other hand, others argue that these standards limit the voice of the people, for there should be no limits to what you can post on the internet; it is your voice. Zuckerberg maintains that “every country has laws limiting certain expression, and these are often shaped by culture and history”; basically there will always be some sort of limitation of expression. My own view is that we all have a voice and we have the tools to express our voices worldwide, however, we must respect the voices of others and the government’s regulations, for the government could try to take our voices away. There would be no violence or bullying if we all respected each others’ voices, and therefore, there would be no voice unfairly limiting the voice of others.

In discussions of this article”About Community Standards”,a controversial issue is whether people agree that those sites are bully safe, and won’t bring harm to people. While some will argue that it will help them relieve their stress from many problems. This is not to say “We work to create a safe and respectful environment where you always feel comfortable being and expressing yourself.” In which we strive to make our community safe with the “Community Standards”, to keep use safe from violence.

Many people in our society have suggested that Facebook is a voice for everyone in the world (which it is), but it is important to realize that this site has both positive and negative aspects to it. As Zuckerberg said in this article “We’ve seen people do amazing things once they’re connected”. I can see how Facebook has been a part of miraculous things, such as finding long lost family members and I can see that it is a remarkable thing to have an outlet to share who you are and how your life is progressing. However, there will never be a perfect world where society would make everyone comfortable and safe with expressing themselves and everyone around being accepting and respectful to the expressions of others. An example that shows this idea to be true is cyber-bullying, which in my opinion is one of the worst injustices that has been created due to this new age of technology. Even though there are community standards created to fight the negatives of being open online, no one will ever get to be completely expressive due to the cruelty of society. While there are both negatives and positives to Facebook, I think the freedom of speech it gives society is an incredible thing and I feel that it was truly the first medium that gave people a place to truly share what they thought. I applaud Zuckerberg for his noble cause of trying to make it so everyone has a voice and I think that governments should not feel that they can take the freedom of words out of their own people’s’ mouths. It seems that there is a long battle to fight for a world that truly gives freedom of speech to all humanity and I hope to see the day where the governments of the world give up this battle and let the world’s voice win.

In his post, “About Community Standards”, Mark Zuckerberg gives online sharing and connectivity a new idea. Throughout the article, he often refers to people’s ability to share in an online community a “voice”. He expresses his belief that what people share has value and importance, and that everyone should be given the right to share what they believe and what is important to them. While some may feel that what is posted on social media and other platforms has little to no value, Zuckerberg recognizes the significance the ability to share may hold to others, and sympathizes with them. Previous to reading the article, the allowance of expression on the Internet didn’t seem to have any value or importance to me. Having read his article, I agree with him and believe that everybody should be granted the freedom of expression through the Internet, where others may not have it outside of an online platform. Had I not read the article, I may not have thought of Internet access and the ability to share as important and valuable as it truly is.

In my opinion, I believe that Zuckerberg is doing the best he can for the future of Facebook. I agree with him that people should be able to post whatever they want. People should have the right to post anything, as long as it doesn’t cause harm to anyone or themselves. If someone posts something about how much they hate someone, that isn’t okay. There should be limits, but there are some people who just don’t care. Which isn’t good. They need to know their limits and how much something can affect someone.

In this article, Zuckerberg expresses on how Facebook is a very powerful network. And we can all agree that it is a worldwide social media and that with the growing technology, the internet can be another voice for people all around the world. This can be both positive and negative. This can be positive because everybody should be allowed to express their thoughts through the internet and it is a good way to connect with other people. I agree with him because I do believe that everyone should be able to have a voice, but people have taken advantage of doing that. One of the biggest factors that Zuckerberg does bring up is how cyberbullying is a huge factor in Facebook and how that is only one of the negative wrong with the media. Although it is a good thing for people to be able to speak their minds, then need to be aware of what they are putting on the internet.

Facebook was a revolutionary idea that allows people from all around the world to connect to each other. People who would normally never even know that these other people ever existed . Facebook gives everyone a window into the life of every culture. I think that mark made a very good point when he talks about how people who never would have been able to meet van now meet on Facebook very easily. But I think that yes there are many times where people post very hurtful comments and ideals, but there is no way to silence these people with out taking privileges away from all people so really the only way to deal while problems such as cyber bullying is to simply suck it up and ignore these toxic few. But that’s just my opinion.

Common sense would dictate that what we post online should be regulated to some degree, and at this point in time there are. However, Mark Zukerberg, creator of Facebook looks to change this and connect the world even more successfully than he already has. On one hand ,I agree that people should be able to post freely and voice there opinion. On the other hand, I understand that not every country is like the United States of America, and different countries have different values and laws. Zuckerberg explains that blocking things on Facebook in countries were aspects of this social media is illegal would hurt the citizens of these countries more than it would hurt the company. In conclusion, I feel that it should not be regulated because it is such a useful tool for connecting the world.

Many people assume that Facebook is just for socializing and fun, but Zuckerberg tells us otherwise. He tells us that Facebook is used to give people a voice. It is used to give a voice to the people who are being forced to be silent, and to express themselves and their thoughts freely. I agree with what Zuckerberg is saying; he is trying to use a tool that is often associated with mindless entertainment and media and use it for good: to protect people and their opinions. He doesn’t want the government to regulate what you can and cannot post, and in a sense, he is creating a safe haven for opinions on the Internet. I believe that people should be able to express themselves as long as it is not harmful or hurtful to other people, so I agree with Zuckerberg and his philosophy of Facebook and it’s potential.

At the same time I believe that the internet is giving people voices to speak up for themselves and share their opinion, I also believe that the internet is the root of a lot of problems. Yes, the internet is a great tool for sharing expressions and throwing ideas out there for everyone to see and read. It gives people a feel of not being alone knowing they have a whole world of people on the internet to connect with. It also is a way to share something with many many people all at once. But the internet also cause problems because its hard to run away from. If someone is harassing you online its there for everyone to see. And that’s why some people fear the internet instead of embracing the benefits it has. Once people learn to use the internet in a positive way I think it’ll be a great thing for the world.

I think that it is effective that in the article about Facebook, the speaker states the “they say” on the second page. Before stating why they follow the different laws of the different countries they are a part of. They say, Some say that we should just break the laws of countries we are in, and follow the rules we want, but risk being blocked in that country. But we say that our objective is to give people a voice as much as we possibly can. So being blocked would prevent that.

When it comes to the topic of Facebook, most people will readily agree that it is a place where they are allowed to voice whatever is on their minds to their peers or the people around them. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of opinions. Whereas some are convinced that all opinions are be able to be voiced freely without repercussion, others maintain that this vocal freedom is either not entirely allowed, or should not be allowed in general. I believe that everyone has the right to say what they’d like as long as they are not hurting someone. Voicing your opinion should not be used in a way to put someone down. Facebook had a lot of controversy circling around it for this reason. It, along with other social media sites, has created online bullying, or cyber bullying, that has taken a toll on many people’s lives because of what has been said online. Because of this, many people have begun to believe that the social media sites are the root of the issue, and believe that they need to prevent people from speaking their minds in malicious ways. Others believe that they should be able to say whatever they feel, and that they are sometimes limited on expressing what they feel. If you really feel so compelled to voice your opinion on a very sensitive and controversial subject that may offend anyone around you or viewing your page, I believe you should just leave it off of Facebook. Social media should be for connecting and enjoying what’s going on around you. You should not make anyone feel threatened to take part in what everyone else is taking part in online. For this reason, I agree that people should not have 100% vocal freedom online, and Facebook should have the right to block sensitive material that is receiving negative attention. If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, how is putting it out for the world to see from a screen any better?

In discussions of Zuckerberg’s explanation of Facebook and other messaging apps, one controversial issue has been cyberbullying and violence towards others. On the one hand, Zuckerberg argues that Facebook is to give people a voice and the ability to communicate with not only friends and family, but also coworkers and as Zuckerberg mentioned, business owners finding new customers online. On the other hand, the government contends that Facebook should be blocked and strictly prohibited of some of the things that are able to be posted to Facebook and social media in general. Others even maintain that Facebook is just for fun and shouldn’t be taken seriously. My own view is that I agree with Zuckerberg in the idea that Facebook allows everyone to have a voice but I also agree that people take Facebook too seriously in that they spend way too much time on it and are too distracted by it.

It’s true that Facebook gives everyone a voice. Zuckerberg has created a platform from which people all over the world can connect, share news, and express their own ideas when it would have been impossible before. Although I agree that there are negatives that come with this, like cyberbullying and hate speech, I still maintain that the positives outweigh these negatives, and the creators of Facebook have handled these issues well by monitoring their servers and getting rid of hurtful posts at users request. Zuckerberg could help to eliminate cyberbullying almost completely by deleting offending accounts and when reports of threats come in, they could help victims by creating file that the victim can show to police if they evidence to protect themselves. Facebook can be an incredibly useful and resourceful tool for the community if the leaders of the site take steps keep its users safe.

I agree with his opinion on how Facebook should allow citizens to still have a voice. Facebook was made for people who wanted to speak their opinion and show their voice, whether it is offensive or not. Facebook must follow social and legal regulations. Meaning, if the government doesn’t like something that is on Facebook, it must be taken down. However, cyberbullying is common and in order to prevent that, Zuckerberg follows the government’s regulations. Cyber bullying is a growing problem, not only on Facebook but on all social media cites. Although I understand cyber bullying has become a huge problem these days, social media is out there to allow for people’s opinions to be expressed. I believe that we as citizens should have the right to voice our opinions and show other people information that cant be seen really anywhere else.

I agree with what Zuckerburg is saying. HE believes that everyone should have a voice if not a better one when it comes to Facebook and other apps. A voice to say your opinion about the world or what is going on in your life at that moment. Zuckerburg’s idea for Facebook was to connect various groups of people and the different ways they use to express themselves. One thing that cannot be tolerated though is cyber bullying which has become a bigger issue due to the internet and social media. I think that if the bullying worsens that the government has the right to step in to do something about it. In all, Facebook was created to share photos and ideas between people and businesses. People need to just stop using it for the wrong reasons and taking advantage of it.

Mark Zuckerberg is right about the fact that Facebook does indeed give people a voice that can be projected to a larger audience, but he is wrong about his ideal world in which there will be no problems, of hate and cyber bullying and the fact that everyone on his site can be protected from abuse. Giving people a voice on social media is basically a double edge sword. While Mark thinks that it’s good to give people a voice (and it is) people can also get a lot of hate for expressing their voice on a topic. Then there are the people who take the voice they’ve been given on social media and abuse, and make people who have a weaker voice in the matter basically mute. Anyone who is familiar with cyber bullying or has experienced it should agree that no matter how safe someone tries to make social media, there will always be people who find a way to terrorize those with a voice.

I agree with Donsk, When Mark Zuckerberg stated, “It means protecting you from bullying and harassment, so you feel safe expressing yourself” he could not have been more wrong. The internet has become a place where people cannot have opinions because there are those who cannot stand the fact that someone is opposing them with their own voice. I have witnessed it countless of times on Facebook under Nfl posts where people have an opinion and then someone else comes in and starts to bash that person from stating their opinion about the player, the game calls, or the team in general. So as much as Mark Zuckerberg wants to be able to protect those who are afraid to project their voices, as long as their are people who have different views, that goal is far-fetched.

I feel as if he gave more emphasis on the Community Standard Policy in this article opposed to the Global Government request report. For example, throughout his article he kept emphasizing on how much he wants Facebook to be safe and respectful environment in which you feel safe expressing yourself. Another example being when Zuckerberg states “We also need to recognize the different legal and cultural environments in which we operate.” Mr. Zuckerberg should have given more emphasis on addressing the Global Government Request Report since this is something he wants to be international. Zuckerberg wants Facebook to be worldwide so he should have made that more known as we’ll.

    Q:1
I believe that Mark Zuckerberg has an overall focus on the Global Government Request report. This is because he starts off by discussing the freedom of expression and the governments call to action of regulating what is being said on the internet. Zuckerberg states, “Our mission is to give people the power to share and to make the world more open and connected.” What he means by this is that, we as whole should have the power to say what we want without being regulated for it. Of course, many will probably disagree with this assertion that freedom of expression should be regualted. In other words, what we say we should be careful about because it could infact be misinterpreted a different way. For example he states, “Even if we all had the perfect tools, the internet and the legal rights to express anything, people might still censor themselves for fear of harassment, violence, terrorism or just uncomfortable social situations.” Concluding, this call to action to regulate what we say on the internet can sometimes be misinterpreted.
I agree with what Chris C is saying freedom of speech seems to be more necessary through internet and what we say. This is because in my opinion we may feel more comfortable than oppose to in person. The technology acting as a shield.

Zuckerberg’s gives more attention to the Community Standards, yes he should have focused more on the global government spectrum. Because it seems as tho people are only exposed to what they know and not what they are unfamiliar with. People even online seem to be very close minded and not want to open up. But Facebook is a place where people have a bit more freedom and can express themselves and their views. Zuckerberg didn’t address government because if he would have worded something in the wrong way it may have given Facebook a bad name. So even though he did address the community standards more it was only to protect himself and the people who used his site.

If he included what national governments interacted then there would be a fight over Facebook. Some people would feel left out and others would feel offended. His argument wouldn’t have been strengthened because the other national governments that weren’t mentioned or involved would stop using Facebook all together. Mark Zuckerberg has many good points in his article. He clarifies how through the utilization of his record breaking website, Facebook, numerous individuals across the world have begun to have the ability to now express their emotions and feelings to others that generally would have never been possible. He believes that it is a need and that everyone should use it as a way to express your feelings without anyone or anything stopping you. Cyber-Bullying is a major problem in today’s world and with Facebook, it’s so easy to bully someone over the web. Other than that Facebook is said to be a game-changer in today’s social media. I believe that Zuckerberg is doing as well as can for Facebook. People should have the right to say whatever they want on social media, you just have to make sure it doesn’t cause any type of bullying or harm to anyone. But other than that I believe that there should be a limit to what people should post because it can easily hurt someone’s feelings and can cause something bad.
Tirtha Subedi says that social media is something that connects people from all over. She also states that “In today’s world people are so addicted on social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. The Facebook community have a lot of people connected together, it let people share their thoughts, and post their problem and get ideas from other people” and I agree. Facebook has a unique way connecting people and getting people addicted. It’s a website like no other, you can post whatever you feel and post pictures that will last a lifetime. It’s such a good idea with a great future because it can have people communicate for years even if the person lives 100’s of miles away. Yet some readers may challenge my view by insisting that Zuckerberg’s website is the future of communication but from what Zuckerberg says and how he presents his website to be, I believe it provides many good things. No matter what people say there has never been anything like Facebook or anything that could compete with it.

Whereas some are convinced that people abuse their privilege of having the freedom to say whatever they want online, others maintain that this is not an issue. Freedom of speech is a necessary thing but when it is being used to bully someone or spread false rumors then that means something needs to be done about it. Zuckerberg makes a good point when he talks about what his intentions were for Facebook. He thought it would be a great way for people all over the world to write down their feelings online and share with everyone else. He doesn’t think that cyber bullying would become such a big problem because he is more concerned for people to use Facebook. That’s how he is presenting himself in this article.

Zuckerberg focuses more on Global Government Request Report either than Community Standards Policy Statement. He should continue focusing more on this subject because the Government has the power to take down Facebook, compared to the attention of the Community Standards Policy’s power. Zuckerberg may have chosen to omit his interactions with other various national governments because he may feel as if he releases his meetings he’s had it might cause people that don’t like the other nations to question Zuckerberg’s usage of Facebook and what he’s meeting with them for. I agree with Zuckerberg’s statement “give the most voice to the most people” because if people feel like they don’t have anything to say they won’t say it, unless someone puts them on the spot giving them the chance they need to say what they want. People not stepping up to make their point, others may even start to do the same. Cyber-bullying is a problem that needs to be put to rest as soon as possible, for multiple reasons. First, because cyber bullying is almost half the reason why people commit suicide because they feel hated, unwanted, and as if they have no point or meaning in life. Secondly, this problem needs to be addressed because there is no reason for people to be bullying others for any reason, no matter what their view of the issue is.

Zuckerberg definitely makes some interesting points. Though, I am confused as to why he says Facebook’s main point is giving the most voice to the most people. I thought first and foremost, it was to connect people. Facebook, being a social media website has a “friend system” in which you can request people to be your friend, helping you connect to friends and family members, or even people who you don’t know. Really, the experience is different person to person. Facebook can be used in a number of ways, but some of these ways are only available now because of how it has evolved. People can voice their opinion, in accordance with their government’s laws and the community guidelines on Facebook itself. Although there are restrictions that vary from country to country, I do think Zuckerberg is attempting to make these tools accessible to most people. Facebook’s “point” is certainly up to debate, but I suppose the creator has more authority on that. But if that were his opinion, why does Facebook say “Connect with friends, family and other people you know. Share photos and videos, send messages and get updates.” and not “Express your voice.”?
I agree with Natalie10614. Zuckerberg does want these things available to everyone, and does say he wants to minimize the restrictions as much as possible. I still think that the idea of Facebook wasn’t really to connect different groups of people, though. I feel like they would’ve advertised that on the website itself if that were the intended purpose. With the evolution of internet culture, so too does Facebook evolve. Even if it wasn’t the intended purpose, there’s not much people can do to stop people from using it in a different way.

Mark Zuckerberg explains in this article the reasoning behind his decisions and by decisions I mean Facebook’s policies. He tells us that his overall goal with his social network is to enable people to get in touch with friends and family whether it is long-distance or short-distance, give them the freedom to express themselves without feeling insecure or picked on, and to simply give Facebook users a voice. Zuckerberg repeats multiple times how important it is to him to provide the public with safe community that they can express themselves in where they feel like they have a voice that will be heard. In his article Zuckerberg takes us backstage to show us the struggles that he must face to give Facebook users that freedom. Many countries have laws that prohibit they’re people from expressing certain topics, Zuckerberg attempts to prevent this in his community. If he must block something on Facebook by law then he minimizes the amount of people that are restricted by a landslide.
I think that Zuckerberg’s goal is overall a good thing but he does have continuous issues to face to achieve his goals. Facebook is still by no means a “safe community” it is still widely used for cyber-bullying. People, mostly teenagers, use facebook to antagonize their friends and pick on them which is doing the opposite of what Zuckerberg is trying to achieve. The amount of cyber-bullying only makes young girls and boys want to hide from the world.

I found Zuckerberg’s post to be a fair and positive one. Being the creator of Facebook, I feel that he was great at connecting with Facebook users, by showing them that he values their thoughts and opinions regarding Facebook. I feel that the views and opinions of Facebook users should definitely matter, and be taken into consideration whenever changes are made. Because as Zuckerberg stated, everyone has a voice and share different opinions, and those opinions should be able to be expressed. And, since we are the ones using Facebook, we are essentially responsible for its success. So of course what we think matters!

I think Zuckerburg has a great idea to let other people on facebook be able to express their minds and i very mich agree with him because facebook is slowly becoming a squad for bullies, random people threatening you just because you do not agree with them. He is saying that people should be able to have a say whatever they want on facebook as long as it’s not offensive, also and despite being always bullied by facebook gangsters these people can stand up for theirselves

I think that facebook is a great tool but that face-to-face interaction is much more important and provides people with a better feeling about the experience.
