Generative A.I. tools are rapidly evolving, and universities are quickly developing guidelines for how – and if – students should use them in the classroom. But what do students think? This op-ed, written by first-year college student Tylar Macintyre, responds to the growing use of A.I. detector tools to determine whether students have illicitly used generative A.I. chatbots to compose their writing.

After reading this article about how Artificial Intelligence is significantly changing the way coursework is done I think it is truly hurting the students of our generation. The idea of AI for me personally, I disagree with it in its entirety which also means I agree with this article. I truly believe that at one point because this wasn’t a thing for my parents to use and a resource for them that we as students don’t need this resource either. This is also not helping the students like me, who don’t use AI and could be accused of using it when it is just their excelled writing. Because of AI, it makes me as a college student feel very unsure with any assignment I’ve turned in given these professors have begun to rely on these AI detectors when to me I don’t even use it for any of my assignments. Now don’t get me wrong, AI is a great tool for other reasons but for academic purposes I think it is the worst advancement that technology has ever come up with because it hurts in both ways whether your using it and get caught or if you don’t use it and get accused of that because others are relying heavily on it in every assignment they do. While it seems, many have argued that the positives and benefits of AI outweigh the negatives I strongly believe that this is the worst thing to have happened for education because it is not allowing us as students to use our brains properly and rely on a robot to give this generic answer that is not always the right answer or even the correct answer. So circling back to this article, I agree with all the points that have been made because this technological advancement is the worst thing to happen in our generation and all the points made about students, professors, and assignments are only hurting the students and isn’t displaying the work done in a positive light and rather are being looked at as students cheating when a lot of the time that isn’t the case.

After reading the article, I agree that AI is changing schoolwork in a negative way. I personally don’t like using AI for academic work, and I don’t think students today really need it just because it exists. One problem is that students who don’t use AI, like me, can still be accused of using it because teachers now rely on AI detectors that aren’t always accurate. It makes turning in assignments feel stressful even when the work is completely our own. While AI can be helpful in other areas, I think it creates more issues than benefits in school.

Against this background, Tylar Macintyre argues that A.I. Detectors are unreliable and may wrongly blame students, creating a situation where students feel guilty before they have done anything wrong.
My response aligns with Macintyre’s position because these tools often evaluate writing patterns rather than actual evidence of misconduct. Clear structure, strong grammar, or a formal tone can easily be interpreted as signs of A.I. involvement, which places honest students at risk. Students who are non-native English speakers or those who work hard to improve their academic writing may be flagged simply because their work appears polished. Rather than encouraging confidence, this possibility creates anxiety, making students fear that strong writing might be viewed with suspicion.
At the same time, the opposing side deserves more attention than Macintyre gives it. Teachers face genuine pressure, including large class sizes, limited grading time, and growing reports of students submitting A.I.-generated work. Imagine grading one hundred essays and noticing several that suddenly sound very different from earlier assignments. In situations like this, instructors may feel they have few realistic options to protect fairness for students who complete their work honestly. A.I. detectors, even with clear limits, can seem like a practical solution because they promise quick answers.
This reliance on software, though, can reshape the classroom in negative ways. A defensive learning environment develops when students avoid complex language or ambitious ideas because they fear being flagged. Teachers may also read assignments with suspicion instead of focusing on growth and feedback. As trust decreases, learning becomes less collaborative and more cautious.
There are cases where detector tools might still serve a limited purpose. Used carefully, a detector score could begin a conversation between teacher and student instead of ending one. In that role, it becomes a signal to investigate further rather than a final judgment.
A stronger long-term solution would be assignment design that shows the writing process clearly. For example, students could submit a proposal, a draft with revisions, and a final reflection describing how their ideas developed. This process makes it easier for teachers to see real thinking and reduces the need to rely on automated detection.
Taken together, these concerns support Macintyre’s argument that A.I. detectors raise serious ethical questions. Learning works best when trust comes first, and technology should assist human judgment rather than replace it.

A potential view is that despite the false positives AI detectors are known to have, they are still quite effective deterrents leading to more academic honesty. I believe the best place to add the naysayer argument would be right at the end. Once he finished all of his points he could say that although I grant that AI detectors are good deterrents, I still maintain that causing stress is not equal to healthy academic honesty. He could respond by stating the stress and anxiety caused by AI detectors is not worth the stress on the students.

A.I. Detectors affect more than just flagged students, they make a huge impact on teachers and the entire classroom. Teachers rely on many inaccurate tools and wind up wrongfully accusing students which breaks trust between teachers and students. When classrooms start to feel unfair and students feel pressured, it creates more stress with a “guilty until proven innocent” mindset that forces students to limit creativity and honest learning because they are more focused on avoiding A.I. detection than putting their ideas together how they want to. A.I. also unfairly targets minority and non native English students which increases inequality extremely and forces some students to feel like they have to change how they naturally write. Overall, A.I. Detectors create more stress, reduce trust between students and teachers, and make classrooms feel less supportive for learning.

Following the reading of the article Guilty Until Proven Innocent by Tyler Macintrye on A.I. detectors, it is evident that such technological inventions cause more harm than good within educational institutions. According to Tyler Macintrye , A.I. Detectors, including ZeroGPT, are extremely inaccurate when determining whether students have used A.I. to complete their assignments since most papers flagged by those systems as A.I. written were actually written by humans. This problem is particularly dangerous because, as a result, students may face severe repercussions, damaging both their academic records and psychological well being. Moreover, instead of assisting students with their education, detectors only cause extra stress and anxiety. In my opinion, what caught my attention most in this article is its analysis of A.I. detector bias. According to Tyler Macintrye, non native English speakers and minorities are the ones more likely to be flagged as A.I. written paper authors. As other users have said in other postings about the use of technology in education, methods intended to help students shouldn’t make the classroom environment worse or lead to an unequal situation where some kids excel while others fail. My other classmates have talked to me about these types of situations before involving ai detectors and we have suggested that an excessive emphasis on the role of technologies may even harm students’ development. In my opinion, it would be wrong to continue using A.I. detection systems while being aware of all the risks associated with them. Learning should be an interesting activity that implies creating and trusting people but not fearing to be blamed for something one did not do.

As wt previously pointed out, its evident that AI detectors can serve as an extremely effective deterrent for students who use AI. This still proves to hold true even if the detector produces a false positive for AI use. Due to those facts I have to slightly disagree with the primary message of the article. However I recognize the harm that those false positives can bring, and I suggest a more responsible solution. If an essay or article is falsely flagged, a professor could simply take 5 minutes to ask questions regarding the student’s paper or topic. If a student can display knowledge that is adjacent to the paper, then not only does it assist in proving their innocence, it also displays what information they learned throughout the project. Additionally, it’s important for professors to use context clues when deciding if students have cheated or not. They could check the students’ past writing styles and see if it’s drastically different at all. Plus if the score is an extreme outlier then that should raise suspicion. I’m not saying that students’ past grades/writing styles should automatically produce a zero if different, I’m just implying that professors should add up all the context clues and question the student before deciding what score to give. It’s not responsible for professors to jump to conclusions based solely on what an AI detector says, that point is more than proven here. Ultimately, academic integrity should be protected with fairness and questioning over an unreliable system that “mistakenly flagged 72.55% of this paper as A.I.-generated”.

AI technology is a very helpful tool. If used responsibly, I personally believe AI is an amazing invention. People often argue that AI will take away jobs or ruin our education system. In this article, Macintyre discusses how AI detectors can’t reliably detect AI. This uncovers an ethical problem with educators who use AI detectors. AI generators were trained by books to resemble human writing, so how can AI tell the difference? Macintyre tells us about a study that OpenAI flagged 92% of human short paragraphs falsely. This in itself is an ethical issue, but to add fuel to the fire, AI detectors are more likely to flag minority students. Research shows that AI detectors are flagging minorities due to their simplicity in speech and vocabulary in text-based settings. Minorities have been experiencing discrimination from AI for some time now, not only from AI detectors but also from AI facial recognition. This article really sheds light on the ethical issues with AI detectors in the education system. As Macintyre says, about 56% of college students have used AI to cheat on schoolwork, but these ethical issues that come with AI detectors are providing the students who don’t use AI with the fear that their essay may get flagged. AI detectors do more harm than good.
